The Southern African country of Namibia has a terrific treat waiting for all hikers and travellers who have finished trekking across the undulating Fish River Canyon – Ai Ais. While Ai Ais isn’t exactly a holiday enclave of note, it is home to a scintillating and refreshing group of hot springs that can be found at the southern end of the Fish River conservation area. Meaning ‘burning water’ in the indigenous Nama language, some of the springs at Ai Ais can reach temperatures as high as 60°C. The springs, which originate from deep under the ground, are rich in sulphates and fluorides and are apparently quite soothing for people suffering from the likes of rheumatism or nervous disorders.
