Hey bru, ever travelled the Brew Route? Also known as the Beer Route, this lengthy self-drive route offers beer tasting across the KwaZulu-Natal Province. At least 2 days are required to visit all breweries so the route is likely to appeal to the serious beer drinker, however, the road passes all forms of attraction and can be done as a fun, family road trip. While beer drinkers sip on their favourite tipple, the rest of the family can take in the surrounding sights.
Unfortunately the original first stop which was Firkin Hop House Brewery has closed but there are a number of craft brewers in the area, both established and popup that can act as a worthy replacement.
Next, it’s on to SAB Breweries (now called Anheuser-Busch InBev following a takeover) in Prospecton, 18km south of Durban, where a tour is offered of the facility along with a sampling of 2 beers.
The next stop is along the Midlands Meander and we suggest you book accommodation through www.accommodirect.com, as the drive is fairly long but strikingly scenic. The destination is the Nottingham Road Brewery on Rawdons Estate in Nottingham village and tastings are organised in the old pub. Picture ingredients such as coffee and mango infused into the making of ales, lagers and pilsners and you have the recipe for an interesting tasting experience.
The journey continues to Wartburger Brauhaus in the Natal Midlands, east of Nottingham. The Wartburger Hof Hotel is where sampling of the Swiss owner’s small production of traditional German beer is offered. The beer is brewed under German purity laws that state only ingredients of water, hops and malt are permissible.
Shongweni Brewery offers tastings of their Robson’s Real Beer, an established and popular beer in the region. The brewery lies in a magnificent valley.
The final stop is at the Zululand Brewing Company in Eshowe. Tours are offered of the brewery which is located within the George Hotel. Sip on their beers while the children play on the lawns.
The Brew Route is more than just beer, it’s travel through some of the most interesting and attractive parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
