More info about Luderitz

With wind-swept desert dunes, abounding wildlife, dramatic coastlines, and a diverse blend of cultures, Namibia is a fascinating and alluring country to explore. Lüderitz lies tucked away on the fringe of the Namib Desert along the Diamond Coast and is beautifully framed by the forceful Atlantic Ocean. The working port town has an incredible laid-back atmosphere, almost sleepy, with a surreal appearance lending it a special charm. Grand old mansions perch on hilltops, a nostalgic tribute to the affluence of the diamond mining era. Many of the town's colourful buildings, lovingly maintained, replicate old Bavaria and are constructed in the Wilhelmian Art Deco architectural style. A splendid waterfront complex incorporates the bustling harbour, shops, excellent restaurants, and business premises. A variety of hotels and quaint guest houses offer homely accommodation to suit the needs of all visitors. Visit the Eberlanz Museum in Diaz Street presenting the history of the town and its diamond mining industry, tour the beautiful Lutheran church, a prominent landmark of Lüderitz, and spend a day at Lüderitz Cannery where visitors can watch the rock lobsters being processed which the town is famous for. Visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a spooky reminder of a once bustling mining town, the imposing buildings slowly being buried in the shifting sands of the Namib Desert. Although the rough coast is not desirable for swimming, visitors can enjoy wonderful walks along the stunning Agate Beach and perhaps be lucky to find sand roses or agate splinters in the sand. Take a rewarding drive across the Lüderitz Peninsula which is a nature conservation area offering numerous little bays and pristine beaches. Explore the Diaz Point Nature Reserve, go on a fishing and dolphin watching trip, or visit the Adolf Lüderitz monument on Shark Island, a marvellous spot from where to relish the awesome view of the town. Lüderitz is as exciting as it is demure; a wonderful gripping medley of thrills and peacefulness that will leave everlasting fond memories in the hearts of all.
