More info about Nelson Mandela Square

Dominated by a 6m-high bronze statue of the great man himself, Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton is a trendy lifestyle centre filled with eateries to cater for the financial and corporate lunchtime crowd by day, and luxury stores, art galleries and fine dining facilities for the affluent Sandton residents at night.

Nelson Mandela Square consists of 93 stores offering top designer labels, exceptional art and jewellery, and book stores. Adjoining the square is a 5-star luxury hotel.

Glass-ceilinged restaurants and open air café’s surround the square, all facing the bronze likeness of Mandela that took the artists almost two years to complete and weighs in at an enormous 2.5 tons. The statue is a favourite selfie background for first time visitors to the square.

Fridays are classical concerts day at the Theatre on the Square, held during lunch hours. The venue has won many theatre awards and in the evenings offers a mixture of plays and musical productions to suit all tastes.

The Sandton Gautrain station (the Gautrain is a rapid train service operating between the city and the OR Tambo International Airport) is a short walk from the square, while the Sandton Convention Centre is also within easy walking distance.

The square is a great place to unwind, breathe in some fresh air and get some sun on the face after serious shopping or working under controlled, air conditioned covered spaces. Trading hours are between 9h00 and 20h00 Monday to Saturday and on Sundays between 10h00 and 18h00.

In a past survey undertaken by a local press body, Johannesburg residents agreed that Nelson Mandela Square was the best architectural contribution to the Johannesburg area, and judging by the amount of people that visit or pass through the centre, that opinion still holds firm.
