More info about Omaruru

Namibia is a country of immense vastness, far horizons, and arid deserts, a place unforgiving in the harshness of its climate and terrain, yet hauntingly beautiful. Set in the heart of game and hunting farms in central Namibia, the small rural town of Omaruru has grown from a mission station into a splendid artist community. Bordering the Erongo Mountains halfway between Swakopmund and the Etosha National Park, it is a place where artists have found not only acceptance, but also a market. There are a variety of hotels, bed and breakfasts and guest houses in town, or visitors can opt for accommodation at the outstanding lodges and exquisite private game farms in the area. A collection of new buildings on the banks of the Omaruru River called Kashana Landhaus houses a variety of artists' studios and is a wonderful multipurpose centre with a lovely tea garden, restaurant and trendy bar, accommodation and a unique exhibition gallery. Visit Tikoloshe Afrika, a vibrant gallery and workshop where visitors can watch award-winning woodcarvers in action, or partake in a cultural festival celebrating the rich history of Omaruru. The darling café on the main street, Sand Dragon, is a lovely gathering spot for families and artists alike and supports local artists and regional products which are on sale in their cuisine and curio shop. Indulge in the delicious decadent locally produced chocolates from the Dörgeloh Chocolate factory, or spend a day at Kristall Kellerei, producers of wine, brandy and Schnapps, and also offers wine tasting tours. The fascinating variety of vegetation, rock art, birdlife and wildlife found in the Erongo Mountains makes it one of the richest ecological regions in Namibia. Climb the gigantic rock formations to explore the rock paintings, visit the singing rock and dinosaur tracks, or discover the prolific bird species. Go on a hunting expedition or just enjoy viewing the animals on a game drive. Omaruru and surrounding area is amazing and captivating, it will steal the heart of every visitor with its astounding beauty and incredible ambiance.
