Not much of Victorian Parktown still exists, but the modern Parktown is characterised by a series of office blocks built in a range of architectural styles. Established in 1892, some of the history can be seen in the architecture that has survived urbanization and many of the old houses are being restored. Parktown used to be fenced off, and residents entered via a gate but now anybody can visit this interesting town. A walk through the town will see many renovations and monuments and different styles of houses. In the Wits School of Business grounds, was The Oval, a pasture where cows where brought every morning to graze. More than fifty homes were demolished to build the Johannesburg College of Education and the Pieter Roos Park used to be the centre of the elegant garden suburb of the Randlords. More houses were sacrificed for the M1 North which was built in 1975 in order to make travel easier.

Northwards is considered one of the most stunning houses in Johannesburg, the Parktown Convent has recently been restored and other places of interest have been saved from demolition. The View in Ridge Road is the oldest house in Johannesburg and built in 1896 and the most romantic house, North Lodge, was built in 1905 and modelled on French and Scottish castles. Eat at Mike's Kitchen in Eikenlaan that has survived by being a hotel in the 1930s, the Overseas Visitors' Club in the 1960s and survived a proposal by the city council to demolish it in 1978. The Heritage Trust collected 12 000 signatures and in 1989 this building became Mike's Kitchen. Wanooka in Girton Road was built in 1902 with high steel ceilings, oregon floors, and a three-sided verandah. Now there are offices behind the house with a passageway from the modern glass building into Wanooka. Explore the mix of business and pleasure in this quaint town.
