As one explore the uptown and downtown areas of the town it is not hard to let ones imagination wonder and ponder what exciting times the gold rush must have caused in 1873. Remnants of the bygone era are seen throughout the town which has been declared a National Monument. Mining seized in 1971 but active gold mining in the hills surrounding Pilgrims Rest opened again in 1999. Many of the original buildings are still standing and in use, such as the Royal Hotel, Old Print House, and Dredzen’s General Store. Stroll along the streets and explore the many stalls selling African art or enjoy traditional South African cuisine at the superb local restaurants in the village. Splendid lodgings are located all over town and nearby areas. Discover Pilgrims Rest’s history by visiting the array of museums which offer informative displays and tours of the lifestyle and methods used in the days of the gold rush era.
