A village proclaimed in its entirety as a national monument and a living museum, Pilgrim’s Rest in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa gives the visitor an insight into the gold rush era of the 1870s. The place is filled with stories of characters and legends borne of that time, and several historic buildings have retained their original design. The standout feature is the number of corrugated iron buildings, the largest of which is the town hall.
The origins of the name are unclear, however, a popular story goes that a prospector who had found gold shouted ‘The pilgrim is at rest!’ and the name Pilgrims Rest stuck.
Pilgrims Rest lies on the Panorama Route, a breathtakingly beautiful ramble that begins in Nelspruit to the south and ends in Hoedspruit, near to the Kruger National Park.
