More info about Signal Hill

For best views of Cape Town city, Table Mountain and Table Bay, and without having to expend any physical energy, an easy drive up to the Signal Hill vantage point is the suggested destination.

Signal Hill is a mere 350m in height but the vistas here are simply spectacular.  Facing north are the verdant views of Green Point with its state-of-the-art soccer stadium, golf course and Biodiversity Park in the foreground, and Robben Island and the northern suburbs of Cape Town visible across Table Bay. As one looks eastwards the V& A Waterfront and harbour comes into view, followed by the city and in the far distance, the Stellenbosch Mountains. Looking back, Devils Peak, Table Mountain and Lion’s Head stand as giant beacons over the city, while in the west, the glam Atlantic Seaboard area looks out to nothing but bright blue seas and open skies.

The Dutch colonists first called Signal Hill the Lion’s Rump but this changed after a system of signalling flags were introduced and operated from the summit to communicate with passing ships. During World War II, a number of defensive structures were placed on Signal Hill and their ruins have since been left to become canvasses for trainee graffiti artists. Also dotted around the saddle between Signal Hill and Lion’s Head are a few Muslim graves.

Partway down the hill is the Lion Battery from where the noon gun is operated. At midday, a cannon is fired from Signal Hill to provide accurate time to ships in the bay and the city’s residents. This tradition has endured for over 200 years and occurs Mondays to Saturdays. Visitors can watch the firing of the cannon which is electronically activated by the South African observatory 15km away.

Signal Hill is a popular paragliding launch site and local operators offer tandem paragliding flights from here. Alongside is a short boardwalk to watch the paragliders while enjoying the surrounding scenery.
