More info about Standerton

The historic town of Standerton is built on the banks of the Vaal River, one of South Africa’s largest watercourses. It is essentially the agricultural heart of Mpumalanga, with the farming of maize, dairy, wool and cattle its main economic activities. Standerton is a hotspot for prime fishing, with people travelling to the town from all over the country to cast lines into its abundant reserves. For the sporting visitor the Standerton Country Club has a nine-hole golf course. The Grootdraai Dam, one of the largest in South Africa, is one of the town’s major attractions. The Dam is a hub of aquatic sports and boating, as well as camping along its banks. The Graceland Casino is 65km away if you are planning on staying for the night. For accommodation Standerton is well-equipped. You can set up camp in a municipal caravan park or choose from one of the many guest farms, lodges and guest houses the town can recommend.

Establishments offer various leisure activities, such as horse-riding and guided forest walks. There are even special interest clubs, dedicated to model aeroplane flying, boating and bass-fishing! The Standerskop Nature Reserve is a 128 hectare haven for many bird and animal species, worth a mention for those who love the outdoors. Enjoy a relaxed day beside the Vaal waters in the developed picnic area on the river banks. For those wanting a piece of the town’s history the Kruger Bridge and the ruins of Chief Mzilikazi’s village can be visited. There are even San bushman rock paintings to be viewed nearby. Standerton’s climate is pleasantly average, with an average temperate of 27 degrees Celsius on a summer’s day. The town is relatively central; a traveller’s en route between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Standerton is a weekend treat for the entire family, a considerable but easy distance from chaotic urban life.
