The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is a working harbour. It offers everything in accommodation from Hotels to up market apartments in the marina, the up market shopping mall has over 200 stores as well as arts and crafts markets, theatres, live music and entertainment. The history of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront dates back to 1860, the original Alfred basin could not handle the increased shipping volumes brought by the advent of steam, and subsequently a larger basin, the Victoria Basin, was built. In 1988 the V&A Waterfront Company was given the mandate to develop the harbour basins and combine tourism and commerce, with the continuing operation of the working harbour. The Waterfront provides a variety of entertainment for the whole family. Enjoy the spectacle of buskers, street entertainers and festivals or lively music at the amphitheatre. There are also eleven cinemas .There's historic buildings (38 designated national monuments), Waterfront walks, tours, boat trips and harbour cruises, helicopter flips, seaplane rides, a working brewery and numerous excellent restaurants. The Two Oceans Aquarium, Africa's largest aquarium is in the V&A , the east side of the building is adjacent to the Robinson Dry Dock, the oldest operating dock of its kind in the world.
