The awesome flat-topped Waterberg Plateau is situated east from the town of Otjiwarongo and towers 200 metres high over the surrounding plains. The unique plateau is largely formed of sandstone and sculptured in fascinating shapes. It is an extraordinary place as though frozen in time, evocative of the era when prehistoric dinosaurs roamed the area. This area was the scene of a terrible massacre of the Herero people by the German colonists in 1904 and a graveyard within the Waterberg Plateau Park is a sorrowful reminder of the tragedy.
