While many visitors holidaying in the West African country of Senegal opt for the seaside resort towns to enjoy their sojourn, the city of Ziguinchor is definitely worth a visit. Ziguinchor is the chief town of the Casamance region and lies at the mouth of the Senegal River; the city is, however, largely cut off from the rest of the country to the north as it is separated by the country of Gambia. Ziguinchor is steeped in a rich historical heritage and has always been a frequently visited port by European mariners throughout the years.
It was first controlled by the Portuguese as early as 1457 and was then relinquished to the French in 1886 before Senegal gained independence in the 1960s.
