The little coastal town of De Kelders, is located in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, 160 km from Cape Town, a 35 minute drive from Hermanus, 15 minutes after Stanford and 5 km before Gansbaai “Goose Bay" De Kelders lies on the shores of Walker Bay - renowned as the temporary home of the Southern Right Whale (June - December). Some of the best land-based whale watching in the world is the major attraction of De Kelders and whales come to within metres of the rocks that line the edges of kelp beds along the De Kelders coastline. Walker Bay Whale Watching Villa is ideally located along this coastline.

Explore Klipgat Cave within a 5 minute drive from the Villa. These caves are accessed via the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. The caves were occupied during the Middle and Later Stone Age from about 80 000 years ago to about 50 000 years ago and then again from 2 000 to 1 200 years ago. Amongst some of the main findings in the cave, archaeologists uncovered some of the earliest human remains of Homo sapiens. The bones of early fat-tailed sheep and pottery discovered here show that Khoe pastoralists lived in the area from about 2 000 years ago, one of the oldest dates in the Western Cape.
Gansbaai is home to the highest density of Great White Sharks in the World and where Shark Cage Diving first started in South Africa. From June to December, is home for the Southern Right Whales, who come to our shore to mate, birth and raise the young calves. These two spectacular marine creatures draw visitors and film crews from all over the world.
Other attractions in the area include the coastal hikes along the sandy white beaches of Franskraal and Pearly Beach. Visit the annual Crayfish Festival over Easter. Abalone (Perlemoen) is professionally farmed in the Danger Point area. The Gansbaai Festival takes place annually in July in the Gansbaai harbour and the Winter Fynbos show is a great attraction not to be missed. The Hermanus Whale Festival takes place in early October.

De Kelders Reviews
Definitely a fantastic place to visit during whale season.
The views are just a true beauty of Nature. Walking trails, whales season. comes with the best accommodation in the area and restaurants too.
What a spectacular find, stunning view! A family birthday weekend blessed with good weather and whales to entertain us. Our every need was met, spacious, well equipped, eye for detail and just so welcoming. Thank you Ms Thelma, excellent service and thanks to the owners who allowed us to enjoy it too.
Breakfast in bed is what will keep you going back. Check in and check out went smoothly. Jonathan and Handre along with the staff is absolutely amazing people. Thank you❤️
I will be back.
De Kelders is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The views are simply magnificent. Long stretches of quiet beaches. Whale season is incredible, in 2018 we had more than a 1000 whales in the bay.
However, De Kelders is loved and cherished by well seasoned travelers who return year upon year.
The scenery of De Kelders.
